Sashamon's - Sasha Makia Spiller-Reiff - introduction to music was singing along with ukulele strumming Kupuna (respected elders) in elementary school on rural Molokai's west side. Molokai is place where music is still interwoven with tradition and daily life. Sasha has a deep respect and gratitude for his upbringing. Sasha(mon) never imagined that many years later his music would be shared and loved world wide.
The buzz started when Sashamon shared a few songs he made on his home computer with the tightly knit group of Kauai surfers. The underground demo found its way to a small radio station in Hilo on the Island of Hawaii. “Japanese Squeeze†amazingly became the station's most requested song. Japanese Squeeze was replaced by another Sashamon song “Nectaâ€. Popularity for the music encouraged Sashamon to release the demo “one day maybe†commercially. It was not long before Sashamon's music was top requested on radio stations all over. The music continues in rotation on many Hawaiian radio shows today.
Hawaii is the center of the surfing world in December every year. Sashamon's music became well known in the surf scene due to the music appearing on Pipeline Master Jamie O'brien's movie “Freak Show†and "Freak Side" Many other surf videos featured Sashamon's music as well.
